This is clearly a gimmick pick. That said, the GOP has long beaten us with gimmicks. Frankly I think that in the long term this will prove a problem for McCain. It will bring unwanted attention to his health and age. That said, in the short run it has been a smashing success. He has rallied his base and stolen Obama's thunder in one fell swoop. That, and pretty much sewn up Alaska. We'll have to wait and see how this plays out, but we should not underestimate the potential impact on the race.
