went to a talk by gheorge lakoff tonight (ford hall forum). he's an unbashed obama fan, and says that obama (and speechwriters) not only understand the framing concept, but have mastered it. also says that obamas core understanding of empathy as a guide to governance is the new 'rational' thinking. lakoff was plugging his new book 'the political mind: why you cant understand 21st century american politics with an 18th century brain.

interesting guy.

I was thinking about that stuff when I watched this video - McCain is rather pathetically buying into Obama's frame, and it is a winner for Obama and a loser for McCain. I haven't seen a Democrat setting the frame of the debate for a long time - I like it!

at the end of the talk, somebody asked a question about what frames mccain is working in (and indirectly asked how it could be attacked). mccains frame is working within the 'strict father', 'leader knows best' frame, and the lakoff pointed out that people should look into what roles as commander mccain has taken. and he went further (clearly showing his bias) and pointed out that mccain has not had a commander/leader role in *anything* since his days in vietnam, and people should look into that (ie. reading between lines, he's a hot head and a bad leader).
